About The Position

The Culinary Arts Instructor position at Renton Technical College is a temporary full-time role focused on teaching diverse students in both classroom and kitchen settings. The instructor will be responsible for delivering curriculum, evaluating student progress, and developing inclusive learning activities. This position is set to begin in Winter Quarter 2025 and may lead to a full-time role in the following academic year.

Requirements

  • Five years of management experience in the culinary industry.
  • Teaching experience and current knowledge in all phases of culinary arts preferred.
  • Ability to design interactive learning experiences that respect cultural differences.
  • Ability to work effectively with adult learners and individuals whose first language is not English.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a food handler's permit from the health department.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Experience and/or willingness to incorporate technology in the classroom.
  • Ability to proctor National Restaurant Association Serve-Safe certifications.
  • Associate degree in business, hospitality or other appropriate discipline preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Speaker of a language in addition to English, with preference for Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, or Chinese.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate multicultural competence and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Effectively teach curriculum at a variety of skill levels and evaluate student progress towards learning objectives for the culinary arts program.
  • Create program-learning activities that support individual student learning needs and evaluate student progress.
  • Design courses that meet food cost budget and daily production requirements.
  • Develop and update curriculum in response to industry trends and to improve equitable student outcomes.
  • Maintain office hours convenient to students.
  • Participate in recruiting and job placement activities for students with varied backgrounds and career goals.
  • Evaluate student progress towards learning outcomes through assignments, projects, quizzes, and standardized tests.
  • Design inclusive instructional strategies to reach all students and select materials needed to implement these strategies.
