Full Stack Software Engineer (Tax)

CollectiveSan Francisco, CA
3d$175,000 - $190,000Hybrid

About The Position

Collective is seeking a software engineer to help build the future of our tax products. This is the core system that ensures our members file accurately and on time. For a business, taxes aren't a seasonal event - they're a year-round engine for savings and operational efficiency. You will build the core systems that empower our members to operate correctly, confidently, and strategically every single day, not just during filing season. This role blends product engineering with operational leverage. You will build internal tools that make our tax workflows faster and more scalable, reduce friction for our accountants and tax professionals, and ensure accuracy at scale. Outside of filing season, you will explore new capabilities, better automation, and AI-driven experiences for solopreneurs. We are investing heavily in intelligence across tax. The systems you build will allow the tax business to grow significantly.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional working experience in full-stack development with a strong focus on backend systems (e.g., Python, Django), and the flexibility to dive into frontend or other areas as needed to move the product forward.
  • Proficiency in Python and PostgreSQL, with solid familiarity in AWS technologies, React, and Next.js.
  • Curiosity to explore new technologies, with the ability to thoughtfully leverage AI to enhance product experiences while understanding its limitations.
  • A strong sense of urgency and ownership in driving projects from design through execution and support.
  • Experience with programming languages commonly used in AI/ML (e.g., Python) and web development.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Build end-to-end product features in close partnership with Tax product and design teams.
  • Write high-quality, reliable code that’s easy to maintain and scale.
  • Collaborate with the team to make key architectural decisions that drive scalability.
  • Lead by example, foster a culture of egoless learning, and mentor other engineers.
  • Approach problems with a strong product mindset, balancing technical decisions with user impact.
  • Take extreme ownership across the full lifecycle: design, execution, launch, and post-production support.
  • Drive initiatives that grow our member base to the next level of scale.
  • Enhance customer activation flows to ensure a smooth onboarding experience.
