Geriatric psychiatric nurses undergo specialized and extensive training in understanding the aging brain, normal mental changes due to the aging process and those tied to mental health disorders. Geriatric psychiatry nurses are well prepared to devise appropriate care plans for this population as well as assess for key indicators of decompensation from both physical and mental health conditions.

Requirements

• A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.
• 1 year of RN experience is preferred.
• Ability to assess, plan, direct, intervene, and evaluate patient care.
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Responsibilities

• Meet specialized patient needs for those over the age of 55 or younger with complex medical needs.
• Provide care for the aging population, particularly their mental health.
• Assess, plan, direct, intervene, and evaluate patient care.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
