Mend Coffee and Goods is an accessibility-first coffee shop, retail concept, and community hub dedicated to fostering belonging and belovedness for people of all abilities. It operates in thoughtfully designed spaces for gathering, working, and celebrating. Mend Coffee, LLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hope Heals, Inc., a 501(c)(3) faith-based non-profit corporation. The company's vision is to provide a high-end coffee experience through an integrated employment model, where the team comprises both employees affected by disability and typically abled employees, aiming for an ability-diverse customer base. Mend strives to be a paragon of accessibility in its physical coffee shop space, dignifying all customers. It will be a destination for great coffee, mission-driven retail, and community. Mend partners with Bellwood Coffee for roasting, The Buttery for baked goods, and offers house-made small meals. Its robust retail component features mission-driven gifts and goods that responsibly support under-represented makers. The job purpose of a Front of House Team Member is to contribute to a positive customer experience by delivering exceptional service, maintaining product quality, and supporting daily operations in alignment with Mend's values and standards. The ideal candidate will excel in customer service, uphold high product standards, collaborate effectively, and cultivate an inclusive work environment, embodying Mend's values for a positive workplace culture.

Requirements

  • Knowledgeable about coffee and have prior coffee experience.
  • Prioritize flexibility and productivity while providing quality service in a dynamic cafe and retail setting to the best of one's unique abilities.
  • Dedication to ensuring accurate orders, secure handling of payments (if role requires), and maintaining cleanliness in all areas of Mend.
  • Commitment to mutually accessible communication, teachability, and a patient attitude; thereby, ensuring a positive and dignifying experience for all customers and employees.
  • Will not exhibit or engage in any behaviors that could be harmful in any way to oneself or others in the workplace.
  • Eagerness to work collaboratively in an ability-diverse team environment and being committed to inclusivity, compassion, and peer-support/advocacy to both teammates and customers.
  • Complete, as is relevant to the hired role as instructed by Mend Leadership, Mend's employee role specific training, certifications, or validation program (may vary based on role requirements).
  • Eligible to work in the United States and 18 years of age or older.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service and outstanding hospitality to all vendors, suppliers, teammates, and all guests, which will include an ability-diverse customer base while implementing Mend's values.
  • Foster a work environment that is safe, inclusive, dignifying, and respectful; recognizing and accommodating Mend's ability-diverse team to ensure each team member can contribute meaningfully and effectively.
  • Maintain a tidy and organized workspace by implementing a "mise en place" (aka "everything in its place") practice.
  • Collaboratively contribute to Mend's operations by taking pride in tasks that enhance its efficiency, customer service experience, and ambiance. This may include, but is not limited to cleaning, stocking, organizing, and maintaining employee's assigned area, service areas, and the retail area.
  • Within Mend's integrated work environment expect to practice flexibility in task allocation based on individual team member's strengths and limitations.
  • Enthusiastically advocate for and support the professional success of all team members within Mend's integrated work environment.
  • Prepare, maintain, and provide Mend's coffee service.
  • Crafts and serves a variety of exquisite beverages, by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques, and while utilizing diverse brewing and preparation methods.
  • Promotes Mend customer coffee consumption by preparing and serving a variety of coffee drinks and speciality drinks, along with pastries and baked goods.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by following organizational standards and sanitation regulations.
  • Maintains inventories by replenishing pastries and baked goods, coffee bean supply, stocking coffee brewing equipment, and maintaining supplies for the coffee bar.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, and maintaining supplies.
  • Regularly and hygienically samples Mend's beverages to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Comfortable processing orders and managing financial transactions, with accommodations available as needed to support various abilities for customer and employee.
  • Facilitate Mend's retail program through restocking shelves, tidying the retail area, processing sales transactions, and packaging customer orders as is needed or appropriate based on shift role and task allocation.
  • Welcome guest, register responsibilities, and facilitating coffee, food, and retail service.
  • Create a warm and inclusive atmosphere at Mend by enthusiastically sharing knowledge and passion for coffee, food, and Mend retail offerings utilizing accessible communication to an ability-diverse customer base to the best of one's capabilities.
  • Remain informed about Mend's current beverage and food selections, including preparation techniques, with resources available in various formats to accommodate a variety of learning preferences and abilities.
  • Ensure restrooms are completely stocked and thoroughly cleaned regularly.
  • Accomplishes critical operational tasks to facilitate Mend's service offerings, promotes an excellent customer experience, and effectuates Mend's values.
  • Create a warm and inclusive atmosphere at Mend by being available to enthusiastically share Mend coffee, food, and retail knowledge with Mend's guests and employees through reciprocally respectful and accessible communication.
  • Expect to greet Mend customers, provide accessible menu information, and provide wayfinding knowledge when Mend's Greeter role is not present.
  • Act as a resource for answering customer questions about Mend's service offerings.
  • Promptly organize and thoroughly clean dining tables.
  • Thoughtfully assess seated guests' needs.
  • May processes sales transactions, with accommodations available to support various abilities for customer and employee, as is appropriate for employee and as assigned by Shift Lead or General Manager.
  • Assists with maintaining inventory by restocking coffee supplies, pastries and baked goods, and retail items as needed.
  • Facilitate food and beverage service through supporting essential operational shop functions.
  • Facilitate a tidy, sanitary, and inviting front of house, retail area, and service area environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service and memorable hospitality to all Mend guests.
