The Front-End Clerk position allows you the opportunity to provide superior customer service by way of responding to customer inquiries, providing support throughout their shopping experience including promoting our customer loyalty plan, processing sales and returns using a cash register, and addressing customer complaints when they arise.   • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables under stressful circumstances, dealing with customer complaints, and in circumstances where only limited standards or policies exist.
  • This position might require early morning, last night, and working holidays and weekends.
  • Ability to work all assigned work schedules and comply with all time and attendance policies.
  • This position requires an individual capable of sitting, standing for extensive period of time, walking, bending, climbing stairs, and carrying loads up to 25 pounds including the use of hands and fingers to feel, use cash registers, and other related machines.
  • Ability to proficiently read, write, speak, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones, and be able to communicate effectively with department employees, the store's coworkers and customers; Company handbooks, policies and procedures, and; Other written job-related documents including safety notices and other postings on company bulletin boards.
  • Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and ability to adjust focus including having sufficient visual acuity to check and verify pricing and UPC codes.
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Must possess the math skills necessary to handle sales transactions, tender change, verify vendor invoice charges, and be able to balance cash receipts or troubleshoot errors or discrepancies in cash or column balance.
  • Must have a good understanding and use of the cash register.
  • Ability to work with fresh, dried and/or processed products, spices and powdered substances without negative allergic consequences.
  • Ability to tolerate dust and cleaning agents during routine housekeeping duties.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures, as needed.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Must be able to react to price and accuracy scanning errors.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance and adhere to scheduled shifts. Arrive on time and leave according to the schedule, unless otherwise instructed. Work overtime as assigned.
  • Follow company grooming and dress policies, including wearing the appropriate uniform, name badge, and any required accessories (hat/apron).
  • Perform duties in accordance with company policies, safety standards, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Provide prompt, courteous service to all customers. Greet customers within 10 feet and engage with them attentively. Practice active listening to understand and meet customer needs. Follow the "three-deep rule" to maintain a smooth flow at checkout lanes, and call for backup when necessary. Ask customers if they have additional needs during checkout (e.g., "Is that everything for you today, Mrs. Jones?"). Reinforce the company's commitment to customer satisfaction, ensuring all team members prioritize customer service.
  • Understand and operate the cash register, following all cash handling procedures. Accurately process payments (cash, credit, checks, EBT, WIC, coupons, etc.), ensuring correct change is provided and counted back properly.
  • Stay informed about store products, including produce, and their locations. Efficiently process customer orders with accuracy, minimizing errors. Promote charitable promotions or sales to customers.
  • Regularly lift, pull, and rotate merchandise weighing up to 50 lbs. Stand at the register station for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day).
  • Ensure safe and efficient bagging of groceries, separating items by type (e.g., dry, frozen, refrigerated). Handle damaged or returned products according to company policy, with special attention to perishables. Adhere to shrinkage control practices for Front-End operations. Maintain an organized check stand and store environment, keeping floors clear of debris and spills.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures at all times. Clean and maintain work areas, including registers, floors, and hospitality tables. Safely use cleaning chemicals per manufacturer instructions.
  • Assist in mentoring and training new cashiers as directed by the Front-End Shift Supervisor. Participate in store meetings to stay informed on store performance, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete tasks in a timely, ethical, and professional manner. Stay productive during idle times, including restocking check lanes when needed. Refrain from personal visits during work hours and maintain focus on assigned tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Front-End Manager or Shift Supervisor.
