About The Position

Isidore Newman School seeks a scholarly, dynamic, intellectually curious and mission-aligned French educator for the 2026-2027 academic year. The ideal candidate will have meaningful experience designing and teaching a variety of engaging and challenging courses, from French I to French V, including Honors sections. The World Language Department at Newman is rooted in an immersion approach in which the target language is used as the primary medium for learning, communication, and inquiry. At Newman the World Language classrooms are designed to be dynamic, engaging, student-centered spaces that emphasize language as a reflection of history, identity and lived experience across the world. A dedicated educator with high proficiency in the target language, cultural fluency and curiosity, as well as a genuine passion for language learning, will thrive in Newman's World Language Department. Our Upper School French curriculum includes French I to French IV, AP French, and Global Studies Francophone Africa. Teaching French at Newman Teaching French at Newman is an engaging and collaborative opportunity to work closely with students as they develop linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and global perspective. World Languages is a substantial three-year requirement in the Upper School, allowing teachers to build sustained relationships with students while guiding them through an increasingly sophisticated and immersive study of Francophone language and cultures. On any given day in a French classroom, you might observe spirited discussion in the target language, close reading of authentic texts or student presentations informed by cultural and historical context. Our history-rich city of New Orleans, with its deep French and Francophone roots, exceptional museums, archives, and cultural institutions, serves as a natural extension of the classroom and an ideal backdrop for teaching and learning in the World Languages Department. Working at Newman Founded in 1903, Newman has a rich history in the heart of New Orleans, just blocks from historic St. Charles Avenue, Audubon Park, and the vibrant music culture that makes our city one-of-a-kind. Our community includes approximately 1,250 students and 250 employees from Green Trees to 12th grade. There is a spirit of camaraderie and collegiality among faculty and staff. Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in French or a closely related field; graduate work in the discipline desired.
  • Substantial teaching experience at the Upper School level with demonstrated expertise in teaching a variety of course levels and electives.
  • Values strong relationships with their students while maintaining high expectations in the academic program.
  • Demonstrated fluency in both written and spoken French, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in academic and conversational settings.
  • Cultural competency demonstrating respect for diversity of identities and experiences and an orientation toward equity and inclusion.
  • Professional orientation towards collaboration and innovation including strong proficiency with technology appropriate to the World Languages classroom.
  • A reflective practitioner, committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning.
  • A student-centered educator, who embodies our school philosophy "We learn to do by doing."
  • A positive sense of humor, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must meet and maintain any and all federal, state and local requirements to work in an educational childcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching up to five sections of French, including the possibility of French IV, French IV-Honors, French V, and French V Honors
  • Develop and implement engaging daily lesson plans that align with the department's curriculum and school's pedagogical ethos.
  • Develop strong relationships with students, parents and advisors to support learning and growth.
  • Foster a growth mindset among all students.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to support student learning.
  • Write clear, detailed report card comments that help parents understand the progress of their child in our curriculum.
  • Serve as advisor to a small group of students and/or participate in extracurricular activities.
  • Implement classroom and communication practices that foster the growth of ethical behavior, social skills, and excellent work habits.
  • Participate as a positive, collaborative and innovative team member who will support the mission and culture of the division and school.
