About The Position

The Freight Trans-Loader/Conductor is a versatile role responsible for both the safe and efficient operation of trains and the loading/unloading of freight railcars. This position combines operational, customer service, and hands-on freight handling duties. The ideal candidate is passionate about railroads and heritage tourism, mechanically inclined, safety-conscious, and comfortable working in dynamic outdoor environments.

Requirements

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical ability to stand, walk, lift (50+ lbs.), and perform duties in varying weather conditions.
Mechanically inclined with experience operating heavy machinery or freight-handling equipment.
Familiarity with railroad operations, safety procedures, or freight handling a plus.
Enthusiasm for railroads, history, heritage tourism, or freight operations.
Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and confidence in performing diverse tasks.
Organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow verbal or written instructions.

Nice To Haves

FRA Part 242 Conductor Certification preferred.
Familiarity with railroad operations, safety procedures, or freight handling a plus.

Responsibilities

Load and unload inbound/outbound railcars, trucks, or storage areas with products such as grain, aggregate, lumber, and liquids.
Prepare empty and loaded railcars for safe movement.
Operate machinery including forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loaders, backhoes, grain elevators, and overhead cranes.
Perform routine maintenance and inspections on equipment.
Document work, billing, and freight movement using computers.
Cross-trained in applicable FRA regulations and company procedures.
Maintain a clean and orderly workplace while complying with safety protocols.
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or management.
Operate assigned trains safely and efficiently while directing the crew.
Communicate with the locomotive engineer and crew to coordinate train movements.
Perform daily inspections of railcars and report any maintenance or safety concerns.
Respond to emergency situations in accordance with established protocols.
Provide excellent customer service to enhance the passenger experience.
