About The Position

Alaska Marine Trucking provides and manages local freight distribution services in Alaska, including loading, unloading, warehousing, pickup, and delivery. They work closely with Alaska Marine Lines in coastal communities throughout Southeast, Central, and Western Alaska. This is a Seasonal full-time Freight Operations position in Naknek, Alaska, running approximately April to October. The role offers year-round family-friendly benefits, a competitive pay package, and professional growth, with food and lodging provided during the season. Freight Operators perform important tasks in warehouse facilities, marine terminals, and barge vessels, requiring hard work, problem-solving, and adaptability to ever-changing situations. Operators may travel outside their home port to assist other Service Centers. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position.
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours/week on a planned continuous basis due to barge schedules and customer requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One-to-three months of work-related experience and/or training in general freight operations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as bills of ladings, tariffs, delivery receipts, military documents, procedure manuals, employee and safety manuals, and routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively and clearly with customers, vendors, managers, and other employees.
  • Strong communication skills both verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle demanding customer needs.
  • Ability to handle hazardous freight per company and regulatory specifications.
  • Count, weigh, and verify condition/piece counts of freight shipments against various documents (e.g., bills of lading, freight manifests, inspection sheets, delivery receipts, etc.) and record information using a variety of data entry processes in accordance with Company’s standards.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, and the ability to prioritize and problem-solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to organize and follow through to completion projects and tasks assigned or assumed.
  • Ability to provide objective and decisive action(s) necessary to resolve any/all issues with minimal disruption to operational performance.

  • Ability to be certified to operate forklifts ranging from 2.5t to 52t.
  • Ability to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL.
  • 1-2 years of freight operations experience (for Freight Operations II).
  • Certified to operating a forklift up to 52t in a marine terminal (for Freight Operations II).
  • Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements (for Freight Operations II, if qualifying this way).
  • Certified to operate a forklift up to 52t on the deck of a barge (for Freight Operations III).
  • Qualified as a barge master (for Freight Operations III).
  • CDL required in many ports (for Freight Operations III).
  • Advanced level of experience operating friction cranes on land and on barges (for Freight Operations IV).
  • Successfully passing an employment drug test and background investigation are required (post-conditional offer).

Nice To Haves

  • Forklift experience preferred.
  • Experience in the transportation industry is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Secures, unloads and loads breakbulk and less-than container load (LCL) freight with a variety of equipment including banding, dunnage, lumber, binders and chains.
  • Operates a warehouse forklift.
  • Supports operations by working on the deck of the barge to set and pull cones, secure containers and other equipment to the deck of the barge and assist operators as needed.
  • Generally involved with the process of receiving and distributing freight to and from customers at the working facility.
  • Assist in the maintenance of company property and general facility housekeeping duties.
  • Is certified to operating a forklift up to 52t in a marine terminal (Freight Operations II).
  • Efficiently unload and load their truck in a marine terminal, including stacking containers in the yard safely and efficiently (Freight Operations II, with Class A CDL).
  • Is certified to operate a forklift up to 52t on the deck of a barge (Freight Operations III).
  • Qualified as a barge master and understands the rules for stowing and securement of freight and equipment on a barge (Freight Operations III).
  • Assists in the training and development of a Freight Operations I and II (Freight Operations III).
  • Highly qualified with an advanced level of experience operating friction cranes on land and on barges (Freight Operations IV).
  • Actively travels for crane work on and off the deck of a barge (Freight Operations IV).
