Requirements

  • Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field OR 2+ years of experience in brokerage or fleet management
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be detail oriented and proficient at multi-tasking
  • TMS (Tom McLeod Software) & Samsara Software Experience Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prospect, develop, and maintain a consistent book of direct shipper customers in a variety of industries (manufacturing, food & beverage, agriculture, building materials, etc.) throughout the Midwest and nationally.
  • Identify, negotiate, and secure both spot and contractual freight opportunities that exceed the capacity of the company's asset fleet (overflow freight) or that fall outside our core lanes and equipment capabilities.
  • Negotiate competitive freight rates with both shippers and carriers to maximize margin while maintaining service quality and profitability.
  • Quote freight rates to customers quickly and accurately using internal TMS, load boards (Truckstop, DAT, etc.), market data, and lane history.
  • Coordinate and manage the day-to-day execution of brokered loads, including booking carriers, dispatching, load tendering, and providing proactive shipment updates to shippers.
  • Track and trace all brokered shipments, troubleshoot issues (delays, damage, accessorial, weather, etc.), and ensure on-time pickup and delivery.
  • Ensure all third-party carriers meet company requirements: valid authority, adequate insurance ($1M auto / $100K cargo minimum), acceptable safety ratings, and completed carrier packet.
  • Post and work loads on major load boards when necessary while prioritizing direct shipper relationships and margin over volume.
  • Invoice customers promptly and accurately; follow up on payment terms and resolve billing disputes in collaboration with accounting.
  • Meet or exceed monthly gross margin and load count goals set by management.
  • Assist in growing the brokerage division by helping recruit, mentor, and train future brokers as the department expands.
