About The Position

Content Levelers at Newsela are responsible for adapting reading levels of original articles to create accessible content for diverse student readers. They focus on improving the lives of teachers and students by developing engaging, student-centered, and culturally responsive resources. Their main tasks include creating four different versions of articles at lower reading levels, ensuring grade-appropriate content, and participating in projects related to instructional standards tagging and content taxonomy. They must read and write with close attention to detail, monitoring original articles for mistakes and inaccuracies.

Requirements

• Former editor, journalist, and/or writer for a publishing company, particularly those partnered with Newsela.
• Experience in EdTech, tech, or media organizations.
• Experience or education specific to subject matter, including Science, with a degree in STEM or science writing/journalism, or secondary education experience in Science.
• Experience writing and editing for diverse audiences.
• Experience writing about a wide array of topics.
• Understanding of empathetic writing and maintaining a unified voice.
• Additional knowledge in specific content areas such as Social Studies, ELA, or Science.
• Experience in education or childcare spaces.
• Ability to understand and write in Newsela's language.
• Familiarity with Newsela products.

Responsibilities

• Adapting the reading level of original articles to create four different versions at lower reading levels.
• Remaining conscientious of grade-appropriate content, considering vocabulary complexity, sentence structure, and sentence length.
• Participating in projects involving the identification and assignment of instructional standards tags within Newsela articles.
• Monitoring original articles for mistakes and inaccuracies.
