About The Position

The Freedom House EMT Trainee position is a temporary, part-time role designed to train candidates to become nationally registered Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) through a 12-week training program. This program includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training, preparing trainees for full-time employment with the City of Pittsburgh's Emergency Medical Services after successful completion of the training and certification requirements.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License required.
  • Must pass the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment.
  • Must obtain EMT-B Certification, EVOC certification, and Pennsylvania Act 153 Clearance within 12 weeks of starting the program.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in training classes daily.
  • Drive or accompany the driver in an emergency medical vehicle to the site of emergencies as informed by dispatch.
  • Maintain radio or other contact with Public Safety Dispatch, EMS Command Staff, EMS Physician, and receiving hospitals.
  • Administer treatment to ill or injured patients and provide continued pre-hospital care during transport.
  • Lift and carry patients on stretchers from various access areas.
  • Complete patient care reports and other required documentation electronically and in hard copy.
  • Maintain adequate stock of equipment and supplies and clean medical equipment and vehicles.
  • Ensure vehicles are in proper working order and report malfunctions to the District Chief.
  • Perform activities and functions of other personnel as assigned.
