Founding Platform Engineer

AvallonNew York, NY

About The Position

We're hiring our Founding Platform Engineer to own the foundation every agent and product at Avallon is built on: the runtime, the data plane, the identity layer, the security surface, and the observability that makes all of it real. Your work defines how reliable, secure, and fast-moving the rest of the company can be. This is an IC role: hands-on, high-ownership, no direct reports. You'll report to the CTO and work as a peer to our existing senior engineers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience with production systems at real scale
  • You've shipped LLM or agent systems to production, including tool harnesses, evals, multi-provider routing, and runtime architecture. You know where the rough edges actually are.
  • Strong fundamentals: distributed systems, API design, database reliability, auth/authz, attack-surface thinking
  • An autonomous operator. You scope problems, make trade-offs, ship, and flag what needs escalating. No roadmap hand-holding required.
  • High ownership, high intensity. You want to grind on something that matters.
  • Based in New York, or willing to relocate

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated or security-sensitive domain: insurance, healthcare, fintech, or compliance
  • MCP servers, tool-use harnesses, or sandboxed code execution environments
  • TypeScript and serverless in production
  • Prior early-stage experience: you've been in a room with fewer than 20 people shipping something that mattered
  • Comfort with modern AI dev tooling (Claude Code, Cursor) -- it's how we build

Responsibilities

  • Agent runtime and harness. The core execution layer powering voice, email, and document agents, including turn handling, tool use, provider fallback, session lifecycle, and observability. The system every product team at Avallon builds on.
  • Backend infrastructure. Serverless backend, multi-tenant data plane, API surface. Provider-agnostic, horizontally scalable, and a pleasure to build on.
  • Identity, access, and audit. Multi-tenant auth, enterprise SSO, role-based access control, immutable versioning, and audit trails. The primitives that make us trusted by enterprise customers by default, not by exception.
  • Security and compliance. Full ownership of the attack surface across our entire stack, including serverless compute, managed databases, and voice infrastructure, operationalized so compliance compounds into velocity rather than drag.
  • Platform reliability. Observability, on-call, incident response, and runtime hygiene. The difference between infrastructure customers trust with regulated workflows and infrastructure that doesn't.
