Founding Engineer (Backend/Infra/ML Engineer)
About The Position
Our client is a fast-growing, venture-backed AI startup building foundational infrastructure that makes unstructured documents computable and queryable—similar to how relational databases transformed structured data. Their production-grade APIs process and structure millions of pages weekly for enterprise customers, including large financial institutions and publicly traded companies. The platform transforms complex formats (PDFs, PowerPoint, Excel, and more) into structured outputs optimized for LLMs and AI agents—powering high-stakes workflows across industries such as finance, legal, and healthcare. With $7.5M raised and a lean founding team, they are at an inflection point—scaling both product and infrastructure to meet rapidly increasing demand. Requirements
- 2–5+ years of experience in backend, infrastructure, DevOps, or ML engineering
- Strong Python experience (required)
- Experience building and operating production-grade distributed systems
- Deep familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform or Pulumi)
- Experience with microservices, parallel processing, queues, caching (e.g., Redis), and performance optimization
- A strong ownership mindset and comfort working in a lean, high-velocity environment
- You are energized by solving hard infrastructure problems and turning research systems into robust production software.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Rust or C++
- Experience supporting ML, GPU-heavy, or LLM-based workloads (LLMOps / MLOps)
- Background in AI infrastructure, data platforms, or applied research environments
- Experience at high-growth, venture-backed startups or leading infrastructure teams
- Strong academic background in Computer Science or related technical fields
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and scale core backend systems powering document intelligence and AI-driven workflows
- Design and operate high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems in production
- Own infrastructure across deployment, monitoring, reliability, and performance optimization
- Take systems from research prototype → production → enterprise scale
- Build and maintain both cloud and on-prem deployments for enterprise customers
- Establish best practices for CI/CD, observability, debugging, and incident response
- Collaborate closely with founders and AI researchers to productionize cutting-edge research
- Help shape the technical roadmap and engineering culture from the ground up
