Forward Deployed Engineer

Varick AgentsSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

Forward Deployed Engineers are the hybrid role at Varick. You embed with enterprise clients like the strategists do, but you also build. You run the audit, map the workflows, identify what to automate, and then you write the code to make it happen. You’re the single thread from discovery through deployment. This role requires someone who can sit with a CFO and map their month-end close process in the morning, then architect the agent system to fix it in the afternoon. You need both the client-facing polish and the engineering depth. Most people are strong at one or the other. We need both.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of software engineering experience with production systems
  • Comfortable in Python, familiar with LLM APIs, agent frameworks, and tool-calling patterns
  • You’ve done client-facing technical work before — solutions engineering, technical consulting, or customer engineering
  • You can explain a technical architecture to a COO without dumbing it down or overcomplicating it
  • You’ve worked with enterprise systems (ERP, CRM, data warehouses) or can learn them fast
  • Strong product sense — you build what solves the problem, not what’s architecturally interesting
  • Extreme ownership — you run your engagements with minimal oversight
  • Willingness to travel to client sites (25–50%).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior forward-deployed engineering roles (Palantir, Anduril, Scale, etc.)
  • Experience integrating with enterprise APIs (Salesforce, NetSuite, SAP, ServiceNow)
  • Background in consulting or professional services alongside engineering
  • Experience building LLM-powered applications in production
  • Startup or early-stage company experience

Responsibilities

  • Embed with client operations teams to map workflows, identify automation opportunities, and scope implementations
  • Build and deploy AI agents directly into client environments on top of their existing systems
  • Own engagements end to end: audit, architecture, implementation, and handoff
  • Present findings and technical recommendations to C-suite stakeholders
  • Work with platform engineers to feed client patterns back into shared tooling and infrastructure

Benefits

  • You own the full loop: find the problem, build the solution, deploy it, see it run
  • Small, early team: your work directly shapes the product, playbooks, and how the company scales
  • Each engagement feeds into shared patterns and tooling, making future deployments faster and more effective
  • Work directly with operators and executives (CFOs, COOs, ops leads) with minimal layers or process overhead
