About The Position

The Forestry Technician position is a temporary role within the National Forest Service, primarily focused on wildland fire suppression and management. As a specialized firefighter, the technician will operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment, participate in fire operations, and ensure safety during fire incidents. The role requires working under adverse conditions and may involve various forestry support duties.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possess a valid state driver's license and ability to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.
• Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).
• Successfully completed the Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290).
• Must pass the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters at the arduous level.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in operating specialized fire suppression equipment such as portable pumps or drip torches.
• Knowledge of fire behavior and safety practices in wildland firefighting.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an experienced firefighter on a hand crew performing fire suppression and fuels management duties.
• Operate and maintain specialized equipment used in wildland and prescribed fire situations.
• Perform all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, and mop up.
• Collect fire weather data, fuel and soil moisture samples, and maintain records.
• Participate in wildland fire and safety training and ensure safety in all aspects of the assignment.
• May act in assigned positions such as ignition or holding specialist during fuel reduction efforts.
• Assist in project work such as road and trail maintenance and habitat manipulation.
