About The Position

The Forestry Technician (Wildland Firefighter) position at the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, involves driving engines to fire locations while ensuring the safety of the crew and equipment. The technician will perform and direct others in tasks such as starting pump engines, laying hoses, and using nozzles effectively. Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Must be registered for Selective Service if male and born after 12-31-59.
• Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
• Successful completion of one-year probationary period.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• This is a drug testing designated position.
• Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain positions.
• Willing to live/work in remote locations.
• Must meet age requirements for primary firefighter positions.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in wildland firefighting.
• Completion of NWCG Course # S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior.
• Possession of a valid state driver's license or commercial driver's license (CDL).

Responsibilities

• Drive engine to fire locations considering crew and equipment safety.
• Perform and direct others in starting pump engines and adjusting controls.
• Lay hoses and use appropriate nozzles for effective water use.
• Accomplish emergency repairs to equipment.
• Gather information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior.
• Participate in crew proficiency checks, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
