About The Position

This is a non-exempt position. This is a Entry level position that performs technical forest management work for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. This is the entry level in this series classification - individuals at this level desiring promotion to the next higher level (Forestry Technician II) will have to apply and compete for positions when they are advertised. An employee occupying a position at this grade level is responsible for assisting professional foresters, the Supervisory Forestry Technician (or Supervisory Forester), or Forestry Technicians of an equal or higher grade level by performing a variety of technical forestry tasks requiring basic knowledge of forest biology, related physical sciences, and the practical application of standard forestry methods and techniques. The work involves activities related to timber sale layout, log scaling (waste), presales cruising, forest engineering assignments, fire suppression, and forest development. The nature of work is also significantly more complex than the work assignments at the Forestry Aide level.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with some course work in mathematics and science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc). A strong math and science background is highly recommended.
  • Familiarity with forest environments.
  • Knowledge in the use of tools and equipment specific to forestry operations.
  • Knowledge of forest fire suppression techniques, up to what would be expected of some one performing at the advanced firefighter or squad boss level.
  • Ability to identify all local species of trees.
  • Ability to conduct various forest surveys.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks in the outside environment, under all types of weather and terrain conditions.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to keep routine written records, with respect to contract files (completion reports, logging progress reports, etc).
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and the ability to applied guidelines to varied and specific situations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, as needed to meet work assignments.
  • Skill in the use of various manual and power tools and equipment used in forestry operations.
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, data base software.
  • Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
  • If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
