About The Position

The Forestry Technician (Handcrew) (Wildland Firefighter) position involves performing various technical duties related to wildland fire management and prescribed burn operations. The incumbent will coordinate the activities of a unit or team of firefighters in wildland fire and all-hazard situations, providing technical and ecological expertise in long-term planning, ignitions, holding, suppression, prescribed fire preparation, and implementation support. Responsibilities include ensuring safe and efficient preparation, ignition, holding, and mop-up activities during wildland fire management, as well as developing and implementing a comprehensive physical training program for crewmembers. The position requires working with other resource managers to develop and implement prescribed burn plans and assisting with on-site evaluations of conditions, making tactical decisions, and determining appropriate responses.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Under age 37 or requesting a waiver if older than age 37.

  • Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirements of Crew Boss (CRWB).
  • Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Firing Boss (FIRB).
  • Successfully completed the Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5).

Responsibilities
