About The Position

The Forestry Technician (Fuels) position is a temporary role within the Forest Service, focused on managing fuel hazards in national forests. The technician will be part of a fuels management crew, responsible for executing fuel treatment plans, collecting resource data, and conducting prescribed burns. This role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure effective fuel management and fire suppression activities.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen or US National.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Prior wildland firefighting experience is required.
• Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Must have a valid state driver's license or a commercial driver's license (CDL).
• Must pass the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters at the Arduous level.
• Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with hand and power tools, including chainsaws and portable pumps.
• Knowledge of fuels management and fire suppression techniques.

Responsibilities

• Collects and compiles resource data for fuel hazard management programs.
• Executes fuel treatment plans and records fuel treatment activity for reporting.
• Works with timber sales and the Contracting Officer's Representative on thinning contracts.
• Conducts pre-attack plans and sets annual priorities for fuel treatment projects.
• Maintains and updates fuel management inventories as conditions change.
• Coordinates fuel treatment plans with other functions to optimize workforce resources.
• Carries out prescribed burning plans and supervises burning projects.
• Makes initial attack on fires as needed.
• Locates areas for commercial and free use fuel wood removal.
