About The Position

The Forestry Technician (Fire Dispatch) position at the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, involves operating and directing various dispatch telecommunication systems and providing wildfire suppression support as directed. The technician anticipates fire suppression needs, determines resource allocation, and reviews internal operating procedures to make recommendations for improvement. Responsibilities include inputting data into fire-related computer applications, planning logistical support for fire management programs, and coordinating fire training and orientation.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations.
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire strategies.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior and weather conditions.
  • Experience in coordinating aviation dispatch operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and directs the operation of various dispatch telecommunication systems.
  • Performs wildfire suppression support as directed.
  • Anticipates fire suppression needs and determines resource allocation.
  • Reviews internal operating procedures and systems, makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Updates and develops operating plans and mobilization guides.
  • Inputs data into fire-related computer applications and assesses outputs.
  • Plans and provides logistical support information for fire management program activities.
  • Develops and implements fire program management project work plans.
  • Provides information and consults with cooperators and other entities.
  • Coordinates and assists with fire training and orientation.
