About The Position

The Forestry Technician (FFTR) position involves working as a member of a fire crew to suppress wildland fires. Duties include moving dirt, chopping brush, and felling small trees to build fire lines using hand tools and power saws. The technician will patrol areas of controlled fires to extinguish any remaining burning material and operate specialized fire suppression equipment. When not engaged in fire suppression, the technician may be assigned to other resource management activities such as fuels, recreation, timber, or reforestation.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management positions.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations.
  • Under age 37 or eligible for a waiver if older.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in forestry aid or technician work.
  • Experience in engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work.
  • Experience in farming or ranching work that involves cultural and soil conservation practices.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

Responsibilities

  • Moves dirt, chops brush, and fells small trees to build fire lines using hand tools and power saws.
  • Performs as a member of a fire crew assigned to suppress wildland fires.
  • Patrols areas of controlled fires to mop-up and extinguish remaining burning material.
  • Operates specialized fire suppression equipment such as portable pumps or drip torches.
  • Observes, records, and preserves evidence of the cause of fires.
  • May be assigned to other resource management activities when not performing fire suppression duties.
