About The Position

The Forestry Technician 1 position involves assisting the Lands and Forests team in managing State Forests in Oneida and Herkimer Counties. The role requires working in various outdoor conditions, conducting forest measurements, and collecting inventory data. Candidates will utilize forestry equipment and software to support forest management and public education efforts.

Requirements

• Thirty (30) semester credit hours in forestry, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in specific forestry-related courses, or one (1) year of technical forestry experience in relevant areas.
• Ability to navigate using GPS and compass.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs.
• Basic familiarity with ArcGIS.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in forest management, nursery management, or forest pest management.
• Knowledge of tree identification and measurement techniques.

Responsibilities

• Conduct various forest measurements and collect inventory plot data using forestry equipment.
• Input field data into the State Forest Inventory Program.
• Assist with inventory plot layout and stand management recommendations using ArcMap.
• Assist with public education and presentations.
• Assist with various Unit Management Planning projects.
• Assist Foresters in marking timber sales and performing timber volume calculations.
