About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of NC through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to 100 counties in NC. The Assistant District Forester manages and ensures compliance of Forest Management, Water Quality, Ranger Training, GIS programs and cost-share programs. Position directs and coordinates work on the District’s Remote Access Weather Stations, National Fire Danger Rating programs, Community Wildfire Protection Planning and fuel mitigation projects. Individual will function in various positions on prescribed burns and within the Incident Command System’s Operations and Planning Sections responding to wildland fires, and other “all-risk” incidents within the district. Administrative duties will include personnel hiring, performance management, purchasing, and assisting with managing the district’s program/budget. Work hours are typically 8-5 Monday – Friday. Extended times of readiness will require evening, holiday and/or weekend work. Must be able to be on call for extended times and consecutive days during high danger periods and times of emergency response. Some overnight travel may be required. Occasional heavy lifting is required. Must have a valid Driver’s License Official NCFS uniform and vehicle will be provided at employer expense. Requirements

  • Knowledge of forest management, silviculture and regeneration practices
  • Knowledge of wildland fire suppression strategy and tactics, or prescribed burning
  • Knowledge of environmental rules and regulations
  • Experience training others in forestry related subjects or matters
  • Experience in mountain fire suppression strategies and tactics
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and four years of related professional Forestry experience; or Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and four years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Those not registered at the time of hire must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within two years of employment.
