About The Position

The Forestry Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the city's forestry operations, which includes both administrative and field work. This role involves managing forestry-related programs, staff, and the implementation of the city's forestry management plan, focusing on the planting, care, and maintenance of trees. The ideal candidate will be a leader with a passion for forestry, capable of collaborating to achieve both short- and long-term goals in an urban environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in a documented tree climbing environment, including two years of tree care experience.
  • Pesticide Applicator's License required within six months of employment.
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification required within six months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, motor vehicle records check, drug screen, and physical.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive forestry management program.
  • Manage city tree planting strategy.
  • Oversee tree care including planting, trimming, pruning, watering, fertilizing, tree removal, and pest identification.
  • Perform data collection for citywide inventory.
  • Apply pesticides with consideration for health and safety.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records related to tree care.
  • Operate machinery for tree maintenance, including aerial lifts.
  • Educate citizens on forestry standards for street tree maintenance.
  • Manage the city's Arbor Day program.
  • Serve as crew leader on volunteer projects.
  • Maintain equipment for daily use.
  • Respond to emergency storm and snow removal duties.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Seek and manage grant opportunities.
  • Enforce city code related to trees.
  • Review and provide recommendations on construction documents.
  • Manage the city's arborist license program.
  • Bid out and manage tree-related contract work.
  • Assist with council and board presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
