About The Position

The Forestry Aid position is a temporary role within the Forest Service, primarily focused on wildland fire suppression and management. As a crewmember on a fire crew, the individual will engage in various fire-related duties, including fire prevention, patrol, detection, and prescribed burning. The role requires physical fitness and the ability to work in remote locations, often under unpredictable conditions.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Must be registered with Selective Service if applicable.
• Must pass a background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
• Must meet the Federal Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards for arduous duty.
• Must pass the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters at the Arduous level.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in wildland firefighting or related fields.
• Knowledge of fire prevention and control techniques.
• Ability to work in a team environment under stressful conditions.

Responsibilities

• Develop knowledge of fuels management and fire suppression techniques and practices such as fireline construction, use of pumps and engines.
• Perform assignments related to fire suppression techniques including hose lays, foam and retardant application, and safety rules.
• Search for and extinguish burning materials using water hoses or backpack pumps.
• Build firelines by moving dirt, chopping brush, or felling small trees with hand tools and power saws.
• Patrol firelines to locate and extinguish sparks, flareups, and hot spot fires.
• Clean, recondition, and store fire tools and equipment.
• Assist in other resource management activities such as recreation, timber, or reforestation when not engaged in fire suppression duties.
