About The Position

The Forestry Aid position is a temporary role within the USDA Forest Service, primarily focused on wildland fire management. The role involves working as a crewmember on a fire crew, where the individual will gain hands-on experience in fuels management and fire suppression techniques. This position is open to the public and encourages applicants who are graduates of fire certified programs.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must be willing to live/work in remote locations.
  • Must pass the appropriate level of the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters.
  • Must meet the Federal Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards for arduous duty wildland firefighting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in wildland firefighting or related fields.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression techniques and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop knowledge of fuels management and fire suppression techniques and practices such as fireline construction, use of pumps and engines, hose lays, foam and retardant.
  • Work around aircraft, adhering to safety rules and understanding fire and fuels terminology.
  • Search for and extinguish burning materials by moving dirt and applying water using hoses or backpack pumps.
  • Build firelines by moving dirt, chopping brush, or felling small trees using hand tools and power saws.
  • Chop, carry, and pile logging slash as part of fire management duties.
  • Patrol firelines to locate and extinguish sparks, flareups, and hot spot fires that may threaten developed firelines.
  • Clean, recondition, and store fire tools and equipment.
  • Assist in other resource management activities such as recreation, timber, or reforestation when not engaged in fire suppression or fuels management duties.
