About the position

The Olympic Region of the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is actively seeking a Forest Crew Supervisor - Correctional Facility at the Olympic Camp. The duty station is at the Olympic Corrections Center, approximately 27 miles south of Forks, WA. Outdoor recreational activities here are plentiful and include fishing, hunting, cycling, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding, to name only a few. Mountains and the coast are here for you to explore. This entry-level position supports the activities at the Olympic Camp. Duties of this position include supervision of up to ten adult incarcerated individuals performing pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, litter pick-up, wildland fire suppression, forest road maintenance, recreation site maintenance, and other forestry-related jobs. The primary emphasis will be on providing leadership to the crew, providing for crew and public safety while leading and training an incarcerated individual forestry crew. Travel is required during fire season and other emergency responses.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise up to ten adult incarcerated individuals performing forestry-related jobs.
  • Ensure crew and public safety.
  • Make decisions regarding crew placement and work quality.
  • Motivate and maintain cohesiveness among crew members.
  • Lead and coach incarcerated individuals.

Requirements

  • Experience in forest crafts such as seedling planting, vegetation management, and wildland fire suppression.
  • Six months of supervisory experience in a correctional environment or production-based business.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice.
  • Physical ability to traverse uneven terrain and work in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and two years of driving experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in wildland fire suppression.
  • Experience in forest data collection and natural resource management.
  • Supervision of adult incarcerated individuals.
  • Technical knowledge in natural resources or fire science.
  • Current pesticide applicator license in Washington State.
