As a Forensic Technician, you'll have the opportunity to use your knowledge to support the 4th largest Medical Examiner jurisdiction in the Nation! About the Office of the Medical Examiner Join a team dedicated to providing reliable and trustworthy death investigations in our community! The Office of the Medical Examiner is a county agency charged under Arizona law to perform medical investigations of certain types of deaths. The goal of these investigations is to determine the medical cause (disease and/or injury) of the death to help improve public health and safety. We are looking for service-minded individuals to join our collaborative team to provide help the people of Maricopa County.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • One (1) year experience working directly with decedents and/or patients in a medical environment.
  • OR Combined education and experience qualifications An Associate's degree or completion of 60 semester units from an accredited college or university in Forensic Science, Biological Sciences, Mortuary Science, or other related field which includes completed courses in anatomy and physiology and medical terminology.
  • Successful candidate will be required to complete a post-job offer medical evaluation in order to use N95 respirators.
  • Sufficient strength and physical and emotional stability to work under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to stand for extended period of time and lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work with decedents in a decomposed state and work in malodorous conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Forensic Science, Biological Science, Mortuary Science, or a related field, which includes completed courses in anatomy/physiology and medical terminology
  • Two or more years’ experience working directly with decedents and/or patients in a medical environment
  • Experience assisting with postmortem examinations
  • Experience working or volunteering in a medical examiner/coroner’s office
  • Experience working with decedents
  • Paramedic, emergency medical or surgical training

Responsibilities

  • Assists the forensic pathologist during autopsy using surgical techniques to perform evisceration, removal and weighing of organs, and closing.
  • Takes, develops and ensures appropriate quality radiographs for examinations
  • Inventories and records clothing, personal effects, and valuables
  • Collects, preserves, labels, and records tissue samples and specimens for toxicology, histology, microbiology, and anthropology.
  • Collects, labels, records and secures evidentiary materials, such as trace evidence, ammunition and other objects
  • Collects, labels, records, and secures drugs, substances, and paraphernalia
  • Maintains, cleans, and sanitizes examination tables, stations, and instruments to ensure working order and requests maintenance as necessary.
  • Measures and records the weights of internal organs as they are removed
  • Documents exam-related information into the case management system
  • Transports decedents to and from the body storage cooler using pallet jack and proper lifting mechanics
  • Assists with taking photographs and fingerprinting decedents during autopsy.
  • Stocks examination suites with required PPE, instruments, and supplies
