Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in a biological or physical science, criminalistics, criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license.
  • Experience in forensics or evidence collection may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required education.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and process crime scenes under close supervision.
  • Identify, collect, record, and preserve physical evidence for laboratory examination.
  • Operate a police vehicle to respond to crime scenes, hospitals, and the medical examiner's office.
  • Survey actual and suspected crime scenes, take photographs, and prepare sketches.
  • Search for and develop latent prints.
  • Photograph and fingerprint deceased individuals.
  • Perform gunshot residue tests at shooting incidents.
  • Prepare evidence for further examination, analysis, and processing.
  • Develop plaster and rubber casts of crime scene evidence.
  • Evaluate prints and photographs for accuracy.
  • Operate digital cameras and related equipment to capture images of crime scenes and evidence.
  • Examine, enhance, and produce images of physical evidence, including latent fingerprints and palm prints.
  • Maintain image files on data storage devices.
  • Photograph crime suspects, victims, and victims of suspected domestic and child abuse.
  • Prepare detailed written reports on crime scene processing and complete all required forms.
  • Prepare and present evidence, photographs, and sketches in court and testify as needed.
