About The Position

Provides assistance to forensic pathologists during autopsies. Responsible for tracking and processing all evidentiary material collected at autopsy, receiving and releasing bodies and property, maintaining statistical database and general housekeeping upkeep of pathology division. The position is also responsible for medical photography as required by the pathologist.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and two years of college coursework in biology, biochemistry, anthropology, forensic science, or a related field.
  • One year experience in a medical/forensic laboratory setting or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience in a medical or forensic laboratory setting.
  • College-level anatomy and physiology coursework.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, anthropology, forensic science, or a related field with significant coursework in human anatomy.

Responsibilities

  • Performing evisceration with case specific variances
  • Ensure proper collection of specimens for subsequent analyses and/or examination
  • Collect postmortem fingerprints
  • Prepare process and distribute histology specimens from autopsies. Maintain histology log and computer database
  • Maintain chain of custody on postmortem specimens, personal property, and all evidence collected at autopsy
  • Collect, prepare and process DNA samples from autopsies. Maintain DNA sample computer database
  • Perform and maintain appropriate documentation associated with autopsy
  • Clean autopsy suite following procedures, process and distribute laundry, and clean equipment and instruments
  • Clean and organize tissue storage, body receiving, and the garage
  • Order and/or stock supplies and monitor inventory
  • Execute proper timesheet management
  • Perform medical photography, digital image processing
  • Maintain photo log and computer database
  • Maintain photo/digital imaging equipment
  • Prepare bodies
  • Coordinate release with funeral home staff including any personal property released under chain of custody
  • Ensure proper documentation received and retained
