About The Position

Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNEs) conduct forensic examinations of victims of sexual assault or otherwise impacted by violence in a compassionate manner. A forensic exam may include a medical-forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation and referrals for appropriate follow-up support.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.
  • 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in Emergency Medicine or women’s health.
  • Ability to respond to UVA Health within one hour of page.
  • Critical thinking skills and decisive judgement.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct forensic examinations of victims of sexual assault or violence.
  • Provide compassionate and prompt care and services to survivors.
  • Communicate with survivors and their families regarding evidence collection and treatment recommendations.
  • Participate in mandatory reporting of child abuse and other abuse/assault as defined by law.
  • Provide fact and expert testimony in court as needed.
  • Document assessment, evidence collection, and intervention.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and advocacy groups when applicable.
  • Provide patient education regarding exam, procedures, treatment, STD prevention, pregnancy prevention, and follow-up care.
  • Collect, process, and maintain appropriate chain of custody of evidence and forensic medical records.
  • Demonstrate patient-centered and patient-valued behaviors.

  • Competitive hourly compensation range of $39.90 - $53.00.
