About The Position

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates deaths in New York City resulting from criminal violence, accidents, suicide, sudden apparent health issues, unattended deaths, deaths in correctional facilities, or any suspicious/unusual manner, as well as applications for cremation permits. The OCME operates under the core values of Commitment, Accountability, Resilience, Excellence, and Service (CARES). The Forensic Mortuary Technician I assists Mortuary Operations Supervisors with daily unit operations and the Forensic Autopsy Services Unit as needed. Key responsibilities include performing mortuary procedures and decedent handling, preparing reports and schedules, operating case management systems, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of mortuary areas, reporting incidents, and performing City Morgue Technician duties. This position is identified as essential and may require 24-hour availability during emergency events.

Requirements

  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization
  • one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mortuary and/or autopsy work.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Mortuary Operations Supervisors in day-to-day unit operations and following their directions.
  • Assists Forensic Autopsy Services Unit as needed.
  • Performing all Mortuary Procedures and decedent handling (METT, Check In, Storage, Release of Remains, Intake and Release photos, and Fingerprinting).
  • Preparing incident reports, schedules, and statistics as needed.
  • Operate OCME Case Management System (CMS), CMS Mobile App, and other systems as needed, for all documents (Death Certificates, Burial Permits) relating to the intake and release of remains.
  • Ensuring that the Mortuary areas are properly cleaned, stocked, and sanitized daily
  • Reporting all complaints, accidents, and any incidents to the proper personnel.
  • Performing all City Morgue Technician duties as needed.
  • Weigh remains, lift remains into storage compartments and .
  • Boxes and loads City Burial as needed.
  • Operating a motor vehicle, driving to and from death scenes to perform case recovery.
  • Adhere to all unit policies and procedures
  • Taking fingerprints of remains before, during, and/or after autopsy.
  • Performing borough case reconciliations.
  • Attends unit and agency meetings as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
