A Forensic DNA Analyst Level III functions in a lead capacity assuming additional responsibilities therein. He/she conducts complex analysis on forensic samples and relationships submitted for DNA identification at an advanced level in accordance to established protocol. He/she produces detailed accurate reports of results and conclusions. A Forensic DNA Analyst Level III has the ability to operate as a Technical Leader in the absence of the Technical Leader. A Forensic DNA Analyst Level III follows all laboratory policies and practices in accordance with federal standards. He/she reports to the Laboratory Director and receives direction from the MUFSC Technical Leader.

  • Works without the benefit of immediate technical supervision.
  • Provides expert testimony.
  • Provides general supervision and technical assistance to laboratory technicians and Forensic/DNA Analyst Levels I and II.
  • Conducts orientation and training of Forensic DNA Analyst - Trainee.
  • Guides and assists Forensic DNA Analyst - Trainee.
  • Provides expertise and training in methodology, use of laboratory equipment, quality control/quality assurance, safety, etc.
  • Plans, develops and implements specialized laboratory techniques and analytical procedures.
  • Conducts complex forensic DNA analysis and mixture data interpretation/generation of associated statistics at an advanced performance level in accordance to established procedures and protocols.
  • Conducts Administrative/Technical Review of forensic DNA Analysis.
  • Consults with the forensic community at large on technical issues.
  • Troubleshoots for situations involving procedures and equipment.
  • Performs validation of new laboratory procedures and equipment.
  • Organizes and maintains detailed records, follows established protocols relating to all aspects of laboratory operation.
  • Maintains cleanliness, safety, security and organization of all laboratories and work areas.
  • Follows protocols for chain of custody and sample control.
  • Prepares reagents and solutions following standardized formulas and protocols.
  • Reviews current safety procedures and practices safe storage and handling of hazardous and toxic materials.
  • Attends required meetings and participates on committees as directed.
  • Participates in the continuing education program.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Master's degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a Forensic related science including course work in areas of genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, legal issues and statistics.
  • Minimum five years experience in complex DNA analysis including experience in operation of complex laboratory instrumentation/equipment and experience in conducting administrative/technical review of forensic DNA Analysis.
