About The Position

About the Role Direct and perform daily press operations in the manufacturing of Dow Jones' and contract print publications in a cost-effective manner, with the highest quality standards available using existing technology. Meet customer expectations for reproduction quality, content freshness and productivity, while managing materials consumption cost-effectively. Employ best performance practices, continuous improvement processes/procedures, staff schedules and effective staff development to achieve results. You will be based in our White Oak, Maryland Print Plant reporting to the Operations Manager.

Requirements

  • Strong leadership, initiative, decision-making, staff development and interpersonal skills, and are customer and bottom line driven, with strong record of cost-efficient, timely results.
  • Five years foreman/management or equivalent experience in a production environment, preferably in cold web offset newspaper printing production environment.
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in the use of business PC applications (spreadsheet, word processor, etc.)
  • Extensive technical knowledge of and mechanical aptitude for offset printing techniques, including equipment and best-practice processes.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to business unit financial and operating objectives by: insuring staff employs and maintains effective processes and develops and refines skills; providing leadership; implementing efficient staffing/spending plans.
  • Direct and perform press operations to continuously improve upon the Production Quality Score, which integrates key performance measures such as reproduction quality, content freshness, productivity, and cost-effective materials consumption.
  • Develop and maintain open communication with employees while clearly emphasizing the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Actively administer local labor agreements and company policies with the production manager.
  • Provide ongoing staff training and development to insure each employee learns all appropriate job functions, procedures and equipment operation within the press area of responsibility.
  • Insure performance standards are met and support staff development by providing, as necessary, skill and knowledge enhancement through workshops and active assignments.
  • Evaluate equipment and materials to improve Production Quality Score in a manner consistent with a plant and department wide continuous improvement process.
  • Support and contribute to the development of a diverse work environment.
  • With the production manager's oversight, develop and deliver written performance reviews (unless a union contract provides another mechanism or specifically prohibits them) and development plans to the press staff annually.
  • Maintain accurate and timely written records of employee performance and disciplinary issues.
  • Make salary recommendations for the production manager's approval.
  • Implement policies/practices that insure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and company policy regarding equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, regulatory agency safety and environmental requirements.
  • Keep accurate, useful and timely operational and maintenance records.
  • Work with the production manager to set equipment maintenance priorities.
