About The Position

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division, with over 11,000 employees, is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a significant contributor to Alabama's economic growth. For nearly 85 years, the company has specialized in designing, building, and maintaining amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. As the largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, Ingalls Shipbuilding simultaneously constructs four classes of ships and has a long history of developing technologically advanced vessels for the surface Navy fleet. The Foreman Inside Machinist role involves supervising, assigning, coordinating, and evaluating semi-skilled and skilled trades personnel based on their skill, experience, and job knowledge. This position is also responsible for supervising and training employees to enhance work quality and quantity, recommending further training for skill and productivity improvement, and assisting in the development of training procedures. The incumbent must ensure compliance with all technical aspects of the job, including adherence to drawings and procedures, and is accountable for manufacturing, installation, operation, testing, and process operations that significantly impact the company's financial performance. Additionally, the Foreman Inside Machinist supervises qualified trades staff and monitors job and budget performance across all shifts.

Requirements

  • Possess a thorough technical knowledge of the trade in the area of responsibility
  • Have a solid educational base, generally gained through successful completion of the Apprentice program or the equivalent in education and training
  • If without an Apprentice Certificate or equivalent, a minimum of 3 years trade experience, preferably with some exposure to production planning and support functions
  • Ability to supervise the work of others
  • Ability to motivate and train employees
  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • BS/Apprentice -OR- High School and 4 years combined manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades, military experience -OR- Associate Degree in a Trade/Technical and 3 years of relevant manufacturing, shipbuilding, trade and/or military experience
  • Internal candidates must have a Superior Attendance and Disciplinary Record
  • Candidate cannot have more than 3 unexcused absences in the last 180 day period
  • Candidate cannot have any safety DANS that result in a disciplinary layoff in last 180 day period
  • Candidate cannot have more than 2 total DANS in the last 180 day period (excluding lost tool)
  • Must be willing and able to work any shift assigned

Nice To Haves

  • Strong working knowledge of the ship construction process with emphasis on Machine Shop production
  • Knowing and understanding the travelers system

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, assigns, coordinates and evaluates semi-skilled and skilled trades personnel according to their skill, experience and job knowledge
  • Supervises and trains employees to improve quality and quantity of work performed
  • Recommends training to enhance skill and productivity of employees, and assists in development of training procedures
  • Breaks broad strategies down to practical action plans and ensures employees are trained to perform these plans
  • Responsible for complying with all technical aspects of the job including adherence to all drawings, procedures, etc.
  • Responsible for manufacturing, installation, operation, testing, and process operations that have a significant financial impact on the company's performance
  • Supervises qualified trades staff; monitoring job and budget performance for all shifts
  • Review the Shipbuilding Management Charter 0001 (SBMC 0001) and policies and procedures before applying
