About The Position
The Food Service Specialist I position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves a variety of tasks related to the handling, preparation, cooking, and serving of food for regular, modified, and special diets within a state hospital or facility. This role is essential in ensuring that meals are prepared in accordance with dietary requirements and that the food service areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition. Employees in this position will be responsible for preparing foods, salads, and desserts, as well as cooking or baking a variety of items. They will supply the unit with meat, fish, or fowl as ordered and will be tasked with cutting and preparing these items appropriately. In addition to food preparation, the Food Service Specialist I will operate various kitchen tools and equipment, including knives, slicers, ovens, and steamers, while adhering to written diet orders. The role also includes cleaning and maintaining the kitchen area, which involves operating dishwashers, gathering and cleaning cooking utensils, and removing refuse from the kitchen. Employees will label, load, and deliver food carts or trays and will be responsible for picking up trays after use. Regular maintenance tasks such as defrosting and cleaning refrigerators and walk-in coolers are also part of the job. This position is classified as a basic level role within the food service job family, where employees are assigned simple and routine duties. The work environment requires mobility and the ability to be on one's feet for most of an 8-hour shift, with scheduled breaks. The role demands physical capabilities such as walking, squatting, kneeling, twisting, bending, and the ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds without assistance. The position may also involve operating state-owned vehicles for transportation purposes.
