About The Position

Humboldt Senior Resource Center is looking for a Food Service Rover to support our programs on a temporary assignment through the end of January 2026 (could potentially be longer). The schedule is 25 to 30 hours per week, working 8 am and 2 pm Monday through Friday. Our programs are closed on major holidays, allowing employees to have the time off. JOB SUMMARY: The Food Service Rover provides flexible coverage and support by filling in for absent food service staff and ensuring smooth daily operations across multiple sites. This position assists with food preparation, service, sanitation, and clean-up in accordance with program and public health standards, while also supporting catered events, food ordering, and record-keeping. The Food Service Rover plays a key role in maintaining safe and sanitary kitchen practices, coordinating with staff and volunteers, and ensuring high-quality meal service for program participants. Regular travel between sites is required to provide coverage and support for various nutrition and activities programs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in food handling, food service, and kitchen sanitation required.
  • Food Handler’s certification required (ServSafe or National Registry of Food Safety Professionals or other approved certification).
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid California Driver’s License, and personal auto liability insurance required. Must have a personal vehicle in good driving/operating condition, insured for State minimum liability requirements, and that can be used for the applicable job functions noted above.
  • Requires clearance of a DOJ and FBI criminal history background check
  • Requires Motor Vehicle Report verification.
  • Knowledge of and ability to handle and prepare food in accordance with high quality food preparation, sanitation, and safety standards – including public health, food handling, and food safety standards.
  • Ability to follow prepared menus and recipes, add, subtract, divide and multiply, make close estimates of quantity of food required and to use portion control, as well as make weight and measure conversions such as teaspoons to tablespoons, cups to pints, ounces to pounds, etc.
  • Ability to use Outlook calendar and send and check emails. Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and have basic computer knowledge to use, save and navigate files on a computer. Basic knowledge web-based applications such as timekeeping, training, and email programs.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English. Ability to write and follow oral and written instructions and to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to multi-task and make independent judgement to solve issues quickly and efficiently in a busy kitchen setting.
  • Demonstrates effective social interactions with others.
  • Ability to relate to and communicate with the elderly and frail population.
  • Excellent interpersonal interactions that result in team building and contribute to effective work relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in large-batch quantity food production and/or texture modification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs substitute responsibilities for the following positions according to each respective job description: a. Prep Cook b. Food Service Aide c. Kitchen Aide
  • Maintains safe and sanitary procedures according to program standards and policies in all areas of food preparation and clean-up.
  • Cleans, washes, and prepares food service equipment and home delivered meal carriers as required.
  • Receives bulk food and utilizes proper food handling techniques to hold, portion, and serve food for meals.
  • Ensures temperature control of food by maintaining proper temperatures according to program standards.
  • Records temperatures and portions of food and beverages.
  • Operates steam table and oven/stove top.
  • Packages the specified portions of hot and cold foods for home delivered meals.
  • Prepares milk orders for routes.
  • Follows additional instructions from the Central Kitchen and management.
  • Prepares and serves according to consistency and/or portion modifications as required under the direction of the Registered Dietitian and/or Speech Therapist.
  • Prepares and serves any menu substitutions in accordance with dietary orders.
  • Operates commercial dishwasher to clean all service ware and pans.
  • Directs volunteers in food safety and sanitation regulations in the serving of foods and in cleaning up the kitchen.
  • Keeps work units and equipment clean, including surfaces and cleanable parts.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of dining area. Maintains and orders inventory of janitorial supplies, linen supplies, service ware for home delivered and on-site meals, and other meal service supplies.
  • Informs supervisor of any problems encountered in meal delivery, food service, and related areas.
  • Completes all required documentation.
  • Maintains and tracks the inventory of food and food service supplies.
  • Participates in training and other meetings as requested.
  • Participates in the process of teaching, training, and mentoring student interns and volunteers working within the program area.
  • Pivots between programs and/or travel between various satellite sites to provide support.
  • Provides support to Nutrition and Activities, Redwood Coast PACE, and Adult Day Health program staff as assigned.
  • Travels between locations to provide coverage as needed.
  • Acts in a manner consistent with agency values.
