About The Position

The Food Service Worker supports daily dining operations within a military food service facility, ensuring safe, sanitary, and efficient preparation, service, and cleanup of meals for service members. This role is responsible for proper food handling, cafeteria-style service, sanitation, equipment care, and adherence to all military, health code, and contract standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in food service, customer service, or sanitation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain installation access and required food handler certifications.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability in a structured environment.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs safely.
  • Stand for extended periods (entire shift excluding breaks).
  • Perform frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying.
  • Work in hot, fast-paced kitchen and dining environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a military DFAC or institutional food service environment.
  • Knowledge of sanitary practices, safe food handling, and commercial kitchen operations.

Responsibilities

  • Set up cafeteria-style serving lines, including basic food preparation and replenishment.
  • Serve meals accurately according to portion guidelines and approved menus.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of serving stations throughout service periods.
  • Assist cooks and kitchen staff with meal prep, equipment retrieval, and tray assembly as needed.
  • Comply with all sanitation standards, including FDA Food Code, HACCP principles, and military-specific food safety regulations.
  • Properly store food items in designated containers, refrigerators, and dry storage to prevent contamination or spoilage.
  • Label and date food items according to FIFO rotation requirements.
  • Clean and disinfect dining room surfaces, prep counters, tables, serving lines, beverage stations, and equipment.
  • Collect, sort, and wash dishes, utensils, pots, and pans according to sanitation and contract requirements.
  • Operate dishwashing machines and ensure proper sanitation levels (water temperature, chemicals).
  • Maintain cleanliness of pot-washing areas, scullery equipment, and utility sinks.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment or safety hazards immediately to supervisors.
  • Clean dining room floors, windows, doors, stairwells, and restrooms as assigned.
  • Remove trash, replace liners, and maintain cleanliness of waste disposal areas.
  • Assist in deep-cleaning tasks such as equipment detailing, wall cleaning, or floor scrubbing during schedule rotations.
  • Provide courteous and respectful service to all military personnel and guests.
  • Maintain professional grooming, uniform standards, and conduct expectations consistent with military environments.
  • Follow chain-of-command procedures and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
