About The Position

The Food Pantry Assistant position is full-time, 40 hours per week (non-exempt) and will primarily take place at our Little Village or Humboldt Park locations. The Food Pantry Assistant will assist the Director of Food Distribution and the Food Pantry team with daily tasks to ensure a safe, positive experience for community patrons. This position is in-person.

Requirements

  • Must become a Certified Mandated Reporter. Training provided.
  • Must pass a background check, must not have any pending cases.
  • Must pass a Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System background check.
  • Must pass a National Sex Offender Registry background check.
  • Must have a working phone and phone number.
  • One year experience working in the human services field in a capacity that involves direct services to at-risk youth.
  • Cross-cultural competency.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must be willing to be trained, and proficiently utilize database(s) and information tracking systems relevant to duties.
  • Must keep confidentiality of participant information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license, insurance, good driving record, access to a vehicle. Subject to driving background check.
  • General knowledge of sports.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures pantry safety and compliance with all public health guidelines.
  • Assists with set-up and tear-down of food distribution.
  • Assists with distribution stations for drive-up and walk-ups.
  • May operate a pallet jack.
  • May lift boxes and equipment (max 50 lbs).
  • Assists with loading and unloading trucks and pallets, and stocking shelves, freezers, and refrigerators.
  • Assists with receiving food deliveries.
  • Assists with various general pantry tasks, which include but are not limited to filling boxes with food, breaking down cardboard boxes, sweeping, cleaning, organizing, counting, etc.
  • Assists in training volunteers as needed.
  • Assists with the pantry delivery list.
  • Demonstrated professional and courteous customer service to pantry patrons, staff, volunteers, and partners.
  • Communicates any health or safety concerns to the Director of Distribution immediately.
  • Approves timecard.
  • Supervision includes on-site visits, regular check-ins, and break-out planning meetings.
  • Participates in required evaluations and audits.
  • Assists with daily and end-of-year inventory.
  • Demonstrates New Life Centers’ values.
  • Attends required meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
