About The Position

The Supervisor of Food and Nutrition Services position reports directly to the Director of FNS and directs the food service operations of all schools in Charles County Public Schools, and ensures that local health department, MSDE, and USDA regulations are followed to provide safe and nutritious meals. Operates all child nutrition programs in a safe manner, customer service-forward, and fiscally responsible. The Supervisor of Food Service works with the Director to support nutrition education, training, and staff development activities to enhance nutrition/health program development and performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Food Service Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in school or institutional food service in a management or leadership role.
  • Minimum (2) years of leadership experience in employee supervision and evaluation in food service work in a school system or other large-scale multisite food operation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Valid ServSafe certification or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to school nutrition programs and child nutrition reimbursement.
  • Knowledge of large-scale food service operations, menu planning, food safety, procurement, and budget management.
  • Knowledge of USDA meal pattern requirements and commodity food programs.
  • Manages complex budgets and interprets financial data to make cost-effective decisions.
  • Supervises, evaluates, and develops staff at all levels.
  • Reviews, evaluates, and negotiates vendor contracts and RFPs.
  • Develops menus that meet regulatory requirements and appeal to students across all grade levels.
  • Collaborates with construction and facilities teams regarding kitchen design and equipment needs.
  • Analyzes and applies student feedback to improve menu offerings and program satisfaction.
  • Travels to conferences, training events, and schools throughout the district.

  • School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Supervises the overall operations of the Child Nutrition Programs in the schools.
  • Assists school-level principals and field operations managers in the management of site-based cafeteria programs in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Provides instruction and staff development to all Food Service personnel with respect to local, state, and federal regulations, local and state health regulations, food production and preparation techniques, food merchandising and marketing concepts, accounting for the reporting of cash collections and program participation data, material usage, and time and human resource management.
  • Oversees the school's Food Service operation in providing nutritious meals according to federal guidelines and to ensure and assist with nutrition education in the classroom as needed.
  • Regularly meets with the Director of FNS, Field Operations Managers, and FNS Training Specialist to evaluate operations and direct plans for improvement when needed.
  • Assists in preparations for MSDE reviews as necessary.
  • Oversees and directs Field Operations Managers and FNS Training Specialists.
  • Regularly visits school sites to perform required MSDE audits and evaluate staff performance and adherence to local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Fosters the development of a working atmosphere that encourages innovation and effective human relations among staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
