About The Position

Under the direction of the Chief Program Officer, the Director of Food & Nutrition provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and programmatic vision for CRC’s Food & Nutrition Center (FNC). This role is responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of CRC’s food access programs, ensuring services are equitable, dignified, compliant, and responsive to evolving community needs. The Director oversees staff, volunteers, interns, and program systems related to all CRC food and nutrition services and serves as the primary point of accountability for program outcomes, partnerships, and sustainability. This is a hands-on leadership role that balances strategic planning with operational presence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, social services, nutrition, nonprofit management, or related field required.
  • Minimum of four to six years of progressively responsible experience in social services, food access programs, or nonprofit leadership required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Ability to work sensitively with traumatized and diverse populations and to manage conflict effectively.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with clients, co-workers, volunteers, community partners, and funders.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, manage competing responsibilities, and consistently represent CRC in a professional manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for CRC’s Food & Nutrition Center programs, ensuring alignment with organizational mission, values, and strategic goals.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain best-practice policies, procedures, and systems to ensure compliance with food safety regulations, health requirements, contractual obligations, and partner agency standards.
  • Lead and oversee the planning and daily operations of the Food & Nutrition Center, including serving as the primary point of contact for partner organizations such as Feeding San Diego, Jacobs and Cushman Food Bank, Coastal Roots Farm, Leah’s Pantry, Produce Good, and other community partners.
  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate Food & Nutrition staff and support professional development to promote a strong, accountable, and mission-driven team culture.
  • Oversee planning for food purchasing, equipment, supplies, inventory systems, volunteer engagement, and program logistics, including review and approval of program-related expenses and revenue tracking.
  • Collaborate with CRC leadership to direct and implement food rescue and commodities activities and oversee coordination related to delivery, transportation, and compliance with partner requirements.
  • Develop, collect, analyze, and report accurate program data and metrics, and use this information to inform continuous improvement of services, processes, and service models.
  • Ensure accountability for program risk management, including food safety, client safety, volunteer safety, facility safety, and mobile pantry operations as applicable.
  • Represent CRC in the San Diego region at collaborative meetings, coalitions, site visits, fundraising events, community forums, and partner engagements related to food access and hunger relief.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Program Officer, Development team, and other CRC leadership to research, develop, and implement funding strategies, program models, and innovative approaches that strengthen food and nutrition services and demonstrate best practices.
  • Plan for and support program growth initiatives, including expansion of service models such as mobile pantry operations and future facility expansion.
