About The Position

The Floorhand position at Patterson-UTI in the Permian Basin is an entry-level role that plays a crucial part in the day-to-day operations of a drilling rig. The Floorhand assists the Motorhand, Derrickhand, and Driller in various tasks essential for the efficient functioning of the rig. This role involves significant on-the-job training, providing a solid foundation for those looking to build a career in the oil and gas industry. The Floorhand is responsible for making drill pipe connections and tripping pipe in and out of the drilling hole, which are critical tasks in the drilling process. In addition to these primary responsibilities, the Floorhand is tasked with general maintenance and cleaning of the rig and drilling floor. This includes regular upkeep activities such as sweeping, shoveling, painting, and washing equipment. The Floorhand must also assist in rig moves, which involves helping with rig-up and rig-down processes, as well as the assembly and maintenance of blowout preventers. Regular checks of the rig and equipment for safety issues are also part of the job, ensuring that all operations are conducted safely and efficiently. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to work in a heavy industrial environment, often around moving machinery and potentially hazardous materials. The Floorhand must wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times and maintain spatial awareness to navigate safely around the rig. This position is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects, climb steep stairs, and work at heights. The Floorhand must also be prepared to work in various weather conditions, as the job is primarily outdoors and can involve extreme temperatures and weather patterns.
