The Pharmacy Resident is an active participant in an intensive one year post-graduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency training program to develop extensive knowledge and clinical skills to provide effective pharmaceutical care. The Pharmacy Resident participates in comprehensive pharmacy services including: rounds with medical teams, pharmacokinetic consultations, parenteral nutrition consultations, anticoagulation management, antimicrobial stewardship monitoring, medication reconciliation, discharge counseling, and compliance with clinical pathways and protocols. The pharmacy resident will work centrally and decentrally to perform all functions of a registered pharmacist including accurate dispensing, clinical interactions with the healthcare team, patient involvement, and supervision of pharmacy technicians. The resident will serve as a resource to other health care professionals through educational and training programs. The pharmacy resident will gain an appreciation of the interrelationship of clinical systems, technology and distribution systems to provide an effective medication-use system. This PGY1 pharmacy residency program will build on the resident's Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Pharmacists completing this residency program will be well-rounded pharmacy practitioners and future leaders in pharmacy practice, who are prepared for advanced level practice at a community-based hospital or a PGY2 residency.
