Zone 5 Technologies is seeking a skilled and driven Flight Test Operator to join our growing flight test team. In this role, you will be responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Group I/II UAS in support of flight tests, evaluations, and demonstrations of our Counter-UAS (CUAS) platforms. You will work closely with engineering and operations teams to ensure safe, reliable, and effective test execution while contributing directly to the development and validation of cutting-edge unmanned systems. This position requires strong technical aptitude, hands-on aircraft assembly and maintenance skills, and the ability to perform precise flight operations in dynamic field environments.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in the UAS industry or a closely related field.
  • FAA Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107) with the ability to maintain currency.
  • Experience in planning and conducting flight tests for unmanned systems preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with heavy-lift, cinema, FPV, and/or fixed-wing UAV platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with flight test software and simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations and UAV airworthiness standards.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic test environment.
  • Experience with Mission Planner, QGroundControl, Betaflight, iNav, modern RC link protocols, and various ESC protocols.
  • Battery management experience, including proper handling, charging discipline, and safety protocols.
  • Basic avionics and electronics skills (soldering, wire splicing, reading circuit boards, etc.).
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Build, configure, maintain, and prepare Group I/II UAS for flight test operations.
  • Conduct pre-flight planning, setup, and safety assessments for all test events.
  • Execute flight test missions supporting CUAS development, evaluation, and demonstrations.
  • Capture flight data, logs, and system performance observations; assist with post-flight debriefs and analysis.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot issues and evaluate system behavior.
  • Maintain flight equipment, batteries, ground control stations, and supporting hardware.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of test plans, procedures, and checklists.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA regulations, airspace requirements, and internal safety standards.
