About The Position

The Flight Safety Manager at Hampton University plays a crucial role in overseeing the Safety Management System (SMS) within the Aviation Department. This position is responsible for guiding and directing the planning, implementation, and operation of the SMS, ensuring that safety practices are not only adhered to but also promoted throughout the organization. The Flight Safety Manager serves as a safety advocate, demonstrating exemplary safety behavior and attitude, while also following regulatory practices and rules. This role involves recognizing and promoting hazard reporting, ensuring that effective safety reporting mechanisms are in place, and acting as a conduit for safety information between management and staff, contractors, and stakeholders. In addition to advocacy, the Flight Safety Manager is tasked with the development of operational goals, policies, and procedures that align with the guidelines set forth by The Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). This includes recommending and implementing methods to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency, as well as assisting in the continuous improvement of hazard identification and safety risk assessment schemes. A key responsibility is to establish a Flight Simulator Training Program to ensure adherence to operational safety standards. The role also encompasses process management, where the Flight Safety Manager is expected to utilize applicable processes and procedures effectively, investigate opportunities for process efficiency, and measure the effectiveness of these processes to ensure continual improvement. The position requires a degree of flexibility, as assignments may arise with little notice and may occur outside of normal working hours. As an analyst, the Flight Safety Manager will conduct Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) reviews of data recorders from student training flights and analyze technical data for trends related to hazards, events, and occurrences. Additionally, the manager will oversee the department's flight simulator program, conduct student flight safety and proficiency checks, and prepare newly rated Certified Flight Instructors (CFIs) for flight instruction. Teaching responsibilities include delivering a variety of aviation and flight courses, coaching the university's Flight Team, and collaborating with colleagues in the Air Traffic Control and Aviation Management programs. The successful candidate will be the lead Aviation Flight Safety Manager, responsible for the overall safety management within the university's aviation program.
