Work Shift Various (United States of America) Job Summary: Provides quality patient care to critically ill and/or injured patients in the transport environment via helicopter, fixed-wing, and ground environment. Collaborates and coordinates patient care with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers both internally and externally. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, identifies and completes continuing education, and trains others. Provides essential services in ensuring the safe on-ground and in-flight transfer of acutely ill patients from one health care facility to another or from the scene to accepting facility. Provides Interfacility transport of sick adults, infants, and children and there is an added responsibility of being a community liaison between Wellstar Hospital System and referral hospitals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma General or GED General
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or ARC-ALS - Amer Red Cross Advanced Life Support or ACLS-I - ACLS - Instructor
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program or ARC-NALS - Amer Red Cross Neonatal Advanced Life Support or NRP-I - NRP - Instructor or NRP-P - NRP-Provisional (180 Days) within 180 Days
  • PALS - Pediatric Adv Life Support or ARC-PALS - Amer Red Cross Pediatric Advanced Life Support or PALS-I - PALS - Instructor
  • ITLS - Intl Trauma Life Support
  • PARA - Paramedic
  • PHTLS - PreHosp Trauma Life Support
  • Completion of an accredited paramedic program and associated clinical hours.
  • 3 years ED or EMS experience in a busy EMS system with at least 6 months of recent experience OR 1.5 years or more of flight paramedic experience in a high-volume program with at least 6 months of recent experience.
  • 1 year Critical care transport or flight experience.

Responsibilities

  • Helps coordinate the mode of transportation, communicate with referral and receiving facilities clearly and concisely, quickly assess and stabilize critically ill patients, as well as continuously monitor these patients in a transporting vehicle to assure they remain stable.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the practice of emergent and critical care paramedic practice under little or no supervision.
  • The Flight Paramedic must be adept at monitoring, examining, and evaluating the condition of critical patients who require transport to and from AU Health from outlying hospitals or scenes.
  • Assists with care plans and takes appropriate actions to promote patients short/long-term outcomes and well-being.
  • Directly delivers care as required, applying critical thinking and independent judgment where appropriate.
  • Communicates necessary patient information to family, physicians, and staff.
  • Embraces the concept of patient/family-centered care to maintain patient, family, physician, and referring facility satisfaction.
  • Prioritizes actions according to patient needs and provides input into the plan of care by reporting pertinent information involving patient/family to the appropriate individuals in accordance with confidentiality standards.
  • Respects the role of patients and their family members as integral members of the health care team and therefore encourages and supports the families in all aspects of planning, delivery, and evaluation of their health care.
  • Prioritizes and coordinates optimum patient flow and patient experience.
  • Delivers safe and effective care according to policies and protocols and maintains proper documentation of care and services, as well as change(s) in patient condition or accidents/incidents in compliance with standards of care and program/hospital policies and protocols.
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills to plan and implement patient care while working with multi-disciplinary services and other health care providers.
  • Maintains professional certifications, self-identifies, and self-manages training opportunities.
  • Participates in quality management initiatives and actively seeks improvements.
  • Continuously involved in professional organizations and outside professional development opportunities.
  • Keeps up to date with research literature and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrates professional growth and development in their field as well as in the emergency transport of patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
