About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor, performs mechanic functions for all city vehicles and equipment. Handles the purchasing and maintenance of parts inventory needed for repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED; two (2) to three (3) years of additional schooling, including automotive and diesel mechanics
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience in replacing, repairing, and adjusting a wide variety of motorized equipment operating systems.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use basic Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to work independently with intermittent direct supervision.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to make mechanical repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Problem-solving ability appropriate to the work activities.
  • Ability to perform routine mathematical computations accurately.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and construction plans.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time often in inclement weather, confined spaces, and/or heights.
  • Perform job functions adhering to safety guidelines and policies set for by the administration and/or supervisor.
  • Knowledge of sound environmental maintenance management practices.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the operation of tools and equipment.
  • General knowledge of tools and equipment, including hand/power tools, hoists, jacks, diagnostic and electronic equipment.
  • Frequent requirement to lift, carry, push and pull greater than fifty (50) pounds.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Typically bends, stoops and crouches on a regular basis to perform duties in all weather conditions.
  • Possible contact with potentially dangerous animals.
  • Valid Iowa Driver’s license
  • Valid Class A CDL (with tanker and air endorsements) or able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s license within the first three (3) months of employment.
  • Establish residency with a forty-five (45) minute or less drive of the department maintenance facility within the first three (3) months of employment with the city.
  • Available for off-hour emergencies, snow duty and/or work assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of city fleet including changing fluids, rotating tires, repairs, and safety checks.
  • Keep records of repairs and safety checks using a computer.
  • Conduct semi-annual safety inspection program for all vehicles.
  • Prepare and maintain records of repairs, vehicles, tool and fuel inventory, and material safety data.
  • Operate safely the maintenance and construction equipment, which may include, but is not limited to, dump trucks, tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers, saws, welders, drill press, and other equipment as needed.
  • Operate snow removal equipment, plows, sanders, snow blowers, and shall manually remove snow using a shovel as needed.
  • Load and unload heavy objects, materials and supplies as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs of equipment.
  • Attend training as directed by the Streets Supervisor.
  • Assists with annual budget in regard to fleet management.
  • Fabricate special equipment for the maintenance and repair work.
  • May be reassigned to assist in other areas within the City of Altoona.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
