About The Position

The Fleet Technician Entry Level is a position responsible for performing advanced maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on vehicles and equipment used in solid waste operations. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to complete timely repairs with limited supervision. The Fleet Technician supports Advanced Technicians and works closely with the Fleet Technician team and Lead to ensure fleet reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 3–5 years of experience in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Experience with hydraulic systems and electronic diagnostics.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle systems, including diesel engines, hydraulics, brakes, and electrical components.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, schematics, and service manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Effective communication and mentoring skills to support team collaboration.
  • Ability and willingness to continue technical training and advancement through industry related education.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Comfortable working in tight spaces, under vehicles, and in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
  • Work is performed in a maintenance shop and outdoor environments.
  • Exposure to noise, odors, and hazardous materials.
  • Schedule may include occasional overtime, emergency repairs, or weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics and repair work on engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and other vehicle components.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks, such as brake replacements, suspension work, and hydraulic system inspections.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues efficiently to minimize vehicle downtime.
  • Complete complex repair tasks independently while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Use advanced diagnostic tools and software to identify issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform root-cause analysis for recurring mechanical problems and relay this confidently and purposefully to supervisors.
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, electronic control modules (ECMs), and related electronic systems.
  • Assist Fleet Technician IIs and supervisors with major repairs and fleet-wide projects.
  • Collaborate with the fleet team to ensure efficient workflow and task prioritization.
  • Maintain detailed records of all maintenance and repair activities in fleet management systems.
  • Monitor and report on equipment performance, identifying trends or recurring issues.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of parts usage and inventory needs.
  • Properly Document all repairs and parts used into fleet management software.
  • Adhere to all company safety protocols and regulations, ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Perform inspections to ensure vehicles comply with DOT, OSHA, and environmental standards.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards or non-compliance issues.
  • Perform additional tasks assigned to support fleet operations.
