At the Austin Fleet Mobility Department, we’re proud to play a vital role in keeping our city moving forward. Managing more than 7,500 vehicles across 25 departments—including Fire, Police, EMS, Austin Energy, and Austin Water—we support the essential services that make Austin thrive, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency. Job Description: Supervisor, Fleet Service Center Purpose: Under general direction, supervises the work activities and assignments of various levels of technicians on a work shift who perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles and other motorized equipment operated by the City.

Requirements

  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of fleet operations including, quality control methods, job standards, processing of work orders, pricing, labor hours, and equipment and materials.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • The position requires five (5) years of direct work experience involving the maintenance and repair of complex mechanical equipment, with two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Combination of equivalent experience and education may substitute for the minimum qualifications
  • If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within ninety (90) days of employment with the City.
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty six (36) months.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with heavy trucks, especially refuse equipment (automated side loaders, rear load)
  • Strong hydraulic, electrical, and diagnostic troubleshooting skills
  • Experience leading night shift or independent operations
  • Experience monitoring and documenting staff performance
  • Knowledge of PM programs and fleet KPIs
  • Familiarity with fleet maintenance software systems
  • Ability to manage high-volume, fast-paced shop environment
  • Strong leadership, communication, and accountability skills
  • CDL (Class A or B) and/or ASE certifications preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prioritizes vehicles and other motorized equipment needing maintenance and repairs, monitors and directs work progress of technician staff, approves and follows up on parts orders, and evaluates quality of product before releasing equipment to customer.
  • Assists with diagnosis of vehicles and ensures that repairs are correctly diagnosed.
  • Interacts with customers to provide information on status of vehicle, responds to customer complaints, and responds to service calls.
  • Interprets and enforces City and Fleet policies and procedures.
  • Opens work orders, researches vehicle work history, reviews work orders for parts, and labor charges, completes and closes work orders.
  • Monitors vehicle down report and complies with Fleet operational policies.
  • Manages Labor Reconciliation Report and other requirements maintained by Fleet Services.
  • Assists manager with development of budget and inventory counts, if required.
  • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.
