About The Position

Under general supervision, performs maintenance, repairs and adjustments on vehicles, heavy equipment and other power-driven equipment and machinery, to include marine equipment and engines.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND one - three (1-3) year’s work experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment; specific technical training, certifications or license endorsements may be required for some job assignments.
  • City organization, policies, and procedures.
  • Basic procedures of a vehicle preventive maintenance program.
  • Procedures for the proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, hydraulics, and mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Metal fabrication and welding methods and procedures.
  • Methods used in a preventive maintenance program and identifying mechanical problems.
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Promoting and enforcing City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Safety standards and practices in a shop environment.
  • Federal and state safety laws and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL.
  • Marine equipment maintenance and engine repair.
  • Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel, and electrical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Performing computerized diagnostic tests on vehicle components and equipment.
  • Maintaining equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Welding, metal fabricating and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
  • Identifying safety problems.
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
  • Maintaining accurate service records.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Marine equipment maintenance and engine repair.
  • Fleet Mechanic I- Successfully complete 6-month probation period Hold and minimum Texas Class B CDL and have an insurable driving record Exhibit proper care and use of all assigned tools, special tools, safety equipment, and PPE Successfully preforms preventative maintenance inspections of light vehicles, trucks, and equipment, and makes minor repairs and adjustments Obtains at least 2 ASE certifications Minimum 2-years in position to move to next level
  • Fleet Mechanic II- Maintain minimum Texas Class B CDL and insurable record Obtains at least 2 additional ASE certifications (for a total of 4 certifications) Successfully inspects and diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems on light vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment Demonstrates proficiency in the use and completion of work orders, records, and logs of services performed Begins to learn how to train others Continues to display attributes of Fleet Technician I Minimum 2-years in position to move to next level
  • Fleet Mechanic III- Maintain minimum Texas Class B CDL and insurable record Obtains at least 2 additional ASE certifications (for a total of 6 certifications) Provides Technical assistance and training to other Technicians Oversees minor and major repairs to combustion engines, chassis, bodies, and other equipment on light vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment Orders replacement parts, materials, tools, and equipment for the shop Continues to display attributes of Fleet Technician I and II Minimum 2-years in position to move to next level

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems on City automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs, and prioritizes work; uses technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct vehicle problems and faults.
  • Lubricates vehicles, trucks, and other equipment; changes, repairs, and balances tires; inspects, adjusts, and replaces belts and hoses.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles, trucks and equipment and makes minor repairs and adjustments as assigned.
  • Maintains shop, yard, and equipment in clean and orderly condition; disposes of hazardous chemicals used in equipment servicing and maintenance, as directed.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs vehicles and heavy equipment in the repair shop and at job sites in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls heavy equipment engines, transmissions, power trains, braking, and steering.
  • Diagnoses and repairs component systems and sub-systems for electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic systems engine cooling systems and HVAC systems.
  • Reviews status of vehicles and equipment and recommends equipment replacement and major repair options; installs auxiliary and specialized equipment.
  • Performs arc and acetylene welding as required; fabricates metal parts and tools; builds and modifies metal components and performs body repair and other metal component repairs.
  • Maintains work orders, records and logs of services performed and general vehicle information.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed.
  • Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
